BAY STATE SELECT 0, MILLBURN MAGIC 2

MILLBURN, NJ (07/19/09) - The Millburn Magic continued their post-season run yesterday with a 2-0 win at home over Bay State Select in the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) first round playoff game at Millburn High School. The win, Millburn's fifth in their last six outings, puts them in the semi-finals of the East region playoffs, where they travel to Lancaster Inferno this Tuesday, July 21st for 7:00 p.m. kick-off.

Millburn started the game well, with a strong defensive base, and Shira Averbuch and Tara Ricciardi probing from midfield. 10 minutes into the game they had their first chance, Katie Ryan firing over after good work from Kim Malecki on the right. Despite that close escape for the visitors, Millburn's opening goal wasn't long in coming, Kat Sheeligh linking up with Laura Kurash, whose through ball found Katie Ryan to finish well in the 17th minute. Millburn continued to create the better chances, Sheeleigh twice getting into good positions on her left, and Ryan lobbing the keeper but putting the ball just over the crossbar, as the home team missed chances to add a second.

While Bay State held possession well in midfield, they rarely threatened Millburn's goal, until an effort from Jenni Roncarati in the 38th minute forced Magic keeper Lia Fierro into a sharp save low to her left. That spurred the New Jersey team into action, and when Kurash found some space in midfield, her pass split the defense to find Ryan, whose low driven shot in the 41st minute found the back of the net and made the half-time score 2-0 to Millburn.

Bay State started the second half with renewed purpose, twice firing narrowly over the crossbar from good positions as they tried to force a breakthrough. The Magic, meanwhile, sat back on their lead, and were content to play on the break, Amanda Malkiewicz a constant threat, bending a low effort just wide of the post after good work on the left.

Having absorbed Bay State pressure, the Magic dominated possession and took the sting out the game in the final twenty minutes, although replacement keeper Robin Chernow had to make a couple of smart stops as they moved comfortably to a semi-final clash at Lancaster, who had shocked Boston Aztecs 3-1 away on  Saturday. Favorites and #1 seeds the Long Island Fury host New England Mutiny in the other semi-final this Wednesday for a 8:30 p.m. kick-ff.

With key midfielders Katy Fissel and Lara Kaminski both injured for the remainder of the season, Sones was also pleased to be able to avoid injuries.

"It was almost a surreal game", noted Millburn Head Coach Andy Sones. "I don't think Bay State were at their strongest, so I was pleased that could get the job done without any drama... Lancaster will be a tough game and for us to have lost more injuries would have been devastating, particularly in midfield."

As the Magic hope to further extend a season has already surpassed most expectations, they will be looking to find another high as they visit the Inferno, with a place in the Regional final as the prize.

Magic Line-Up: Lia Fierro, Biz Shenk, Lina Staropoli, Ashley Ventura, Shira Averbuch, Tara Ricciardi, Laura Kurash, Kelly Sims, Kim Malecki, Katie Ryan, Kat Sheeleigh, Subs: Leah Jerome (19), Amanda Malkiewicz (45), Katelin Blaine (45), Kelly Feeney (45), Carly Bray (69), Robin Chernow (75).

Bay State Line-Up: Stephanie Gordon, Danielle Gordon, Emily Milone, Jennifer Leaverton, Shayla Costa, Kristina Cardoso, Lindsay Cunningham, Ana Moniz, Jenna Roncarati, Skyy Anderson. Subs: Kelly Regan, Erin Kaufman, Rebecca Fish, Lynette Zickl.

PHILADELPHIA LIBERTY 0, LONG ISLAND FURY 4

GARDEN CITY, NY (07/19/09) - Paced by two goals from team captain Kelly Henderson of Baldwin, the Long Island Fury shut out the Philadelphia Liberty, 4-0, in their Eastern Conference quarterfinal match tonight at Adelphi University's Competition Field. The Fury had a 25-5 advantage in shots.

"A tremendous performance from everyone," commented Fury head coach Paul Riley. "We established a nice rhythm in the second half."

Long Island swept all three games from the Liberty this season and is now 10-0-1 while Philadelphia finished their Women's Premier Soccer League season at 5-6-0. The Fury will now have a re-match of their legendary 2008 WPSL East Semifinal encounter against the New England Mutiny, hosting last season's conference champions this Weds., July 22nd for a 8:30 p.m. kick-off.

New England (who defeated Adirondack by a 4-1 score the day prior in a WPSL QF match) won last year's post-season match by a 4-2 score.

Cari Roccaro of East Islip, having celebrated her 15th birthday this past week, opened the scoring in the 20th minute when she dribbled into the Liberty penalty area and scored off a 20-yard blister from a tough angle past Liberty keeper Meghan Walker.

Henderson then stole the ball at midfield and scored on a 23-yard shot in the 50th minute. Three minutes later, Molly Bruh of East Williston placed the ball in the corner of the net after a cross by Meredith Speck. Henderson closed out the scoring in the 59th minute when she feigned a pass to the left wing and scored from 21 yards.

Liberty keeper Walker made five saves. Sharing the shut out in goal for the Fury were Jillian Mastroianni of Durham, Connecticut (3 saves) and Brittany Anghel of East Meadow (0 saves). The offensive MVP of the match was Henderson while defensive MVP honors went to Fury defender Alaina Beyar of South Hempstead, who stopped the Liberty forwards every time down the field.

LANCASTER INFERNO 3, BOSTON AZTECS 1

By Mark Goodman (Courtesy of Soccer New England)

AMESBURY, MA (07/18/09) - The best season in the Boston Aztecs women's team history came to an abrupt end Saturday night with a 3-1 loss to the Lancaster Inferno in the WPSL East quarterfinals. The Aztecs (9-1-1) certainly had the majority of possession and quality chances on goal, but the visiting Inferno (8-1-2) took better advantage of theirs and got some great saves from keeper Joy Shaiebly to come away with the win.

"I have to hand it to Lancaster - they came to play - but this wasn't a 3-1 game," said Aztec player/coach Meotis Erikson. "I felt like, for a lot of the game, we dominated and we had lots of great opportunities. To [Lancaster's] credit, they put theirs away."

Erikson scored in the 73rd minute to cut Lancaster's lead to 2-1 after the Inferno got goals from Erin Hench (49th minute) and Emily Peters (72nd minute). The Aztecs threw everything forward in the closing minutes, and nearly equalized in the 88th minute. Midfielder Carol Tognetti sent a free kick into the six-yard box, where Rebekah Splaine eventually got a head on it. Shaiebly made the save, and then recovered in time to stop Erikson on the rebound from point-blank range.

In the first minute of injury time, Marisha Schumacher-Hodge had a volley off a corner kick cleared off the line by an Inferno defender. Just seconds before the final whistle, Lancaster scored with Boston keeper Ashley Phillips scrambling back after trying to assist in attack.

The Aztecs controlled the first half, forcing Shaiebly into six saves, none more impressive than a leaping stop to tip the ball over the bar on a 20-yard corker from Boston's Courtney Sobrero 20 minutes in. The bulk of Lancaster's attack in the first 45 minutes came in the form of long balls over the top, but central defenders Alena Thom and Brooke O'Hanley handled them well. Right back Kristen Habenicht also had a strong game, making a couple good tackles near the Aztecs' area.

"I think we dominated the first half; their keeper came up with some big-time saves and we just didn't put our chances away," Erikson said. "That happens. I would love to see the shot ratio; it seems like they had maybe four or five shots and they put three of them away."

With the Aztecs' affiliation with the Boston Breakers, the team has had multiple players from the WPS side available for each game during the regular season. That didn't happen Saturday night, as the Breakers called up everybody to make the trip to California to take on FC Gold Pride due to seven players being away on national team duty. Phillips was the only Breaker to suit up for the Aztecs.

Erikson said after the game that the relationship between the two teams has worked both ways this season.

"I think what a lot of people don't know is two of our Aztec roster players, Sophia Mundy and [Mary-Frances Monroe signed with the Breakers]," Erikson said. "If you have an MF and a Sophia Mundy, those are two game-changing players... Yeah, it was tough to play without those players, but I still think that we deserved to move on from this even without those players. I think that we're a very good team."

The Aztecs were also hit with an injury bug, as regulars Becca Brook, Jessica Cox and Jenna Giardina were out of action, leaving the team with just two substitutes on the bench.

"We had a lot of things working against us today, and I couldn't be more proud of the girls," Erikson said. "We could've easily rolled over and died after they scored those two goals. I'm really proud of them, and I think that while we're ending on a very sour note, I think overall it's been a fantastic season."

NEW ENGLAND MUTINY 4, ADIRONDACK LYNX 1

FORT ANN, NY (07/18/09) - After a regular season of frustration for Springfield's Brittany Barry that saw multiple near misses keep her off the score sheet, the 16-year old would notch two goals in the quarterfinals of the WPSL playoffs as the New England Mutiny defeated the Adirondack Lynx 4-1 at Fort Ann, NY.

The Mutiny, which finished the regular season 4-6, needed to win its last two regular season games and receive help from several teams just to make it into the 8-team playoff. The Mutiny must now defeat the very teams that gave them a life in this year's postseason. One of those teams was the Lynx who finished the regular season 7-3 and produced a key victory against New York AC, the team the Mutiny finished tied on points, but moved on based on goal differential.

For whatever reason it takes at least 25 minutes of soccer for the New England Mutiny to find success in matches of the Women's Premier Soccer League. The Mutiny have had a penchant for suffering early goals - none more quickly than its quarterfinal playoff match as Adirondack Lynx forward Heidi Reece scored just 30 seconds into this one.

Just seconds after the Mutiny made substitutions did the Mutiny answer with a goal from Danielle Dakin. In the 28th minute, the Wilbraham native took a loose ball from 25 yards out and blasted a left-footed shot over the head of Lynx goalkeeper Meghan Sleezer.

Barry scored her first ever WPSL goal just two minutes later, as Barry took a pass from Courtney Sands and got in behind the defense then blasted a shot by the Lynx netminder. The forward from Springfield, MA has not found the goal scoring as easy as her 59 goal effort two season's ago with Sci-Tech High School, but she couldn't pick a better moment to score number one. The Mutiny led 2-1 at halftime.

Erin Clark made it 3-1 with a spectacular individual effort in the 63rd minute. Clark collected a pass just over midfield and dribbled by several Lynx defenders and fired a shot past Sleezer. Barry would score her second of the match in the 70th minute taking a feed from Jenny Maurer of East Longmeadow. The Lynx applied pressure throughout the second half but could not capitalize on several dangerous opportunities.

The Mutiny must once again watch the scoreboard, however, this time it knows that it will still be playing another match.
