WPSL WEEK V WRAP-UP & SCORES
SeaLions' Gunion (L) continues strong play; Mutiny's Houle (R) breaks Aztec shutout streak

SD UNTED 1, SAN DIEGO SEALIONS 1
SAN DIEGO, CA (06/20/10) - The San Diego SeaLions (2-2-1 WPSL Pacific-South) tallied early in the second half to earn a 1-1 draw with San Diego United (3-2-1 WPSL Pacific-South) at Torero Stadium. In the 50th minute, SeaLions leading scorer Alex Webber collected a cross from Michelle Spacciapolli and slotted her shot from 16 yards out to the far corner.

The SeaLions played another solid technical game, dominating possession time and winning the shots on goal battle (15-9). However, the team has had problems finding the back of the net, resulting in several one-goal defeats. The draw gave the SeaLions one point to keep them in the playoff hunt yet, United won the "San Diego Derby" with a 1-0-1 record in the two matches between the cross-town rivals.

"Playing a high-level technical game is heavily stressed," said SeaLions Head Coach Jen Nielsen. "The goals will come if we continue to lay the foundation of solid technical play. It would be worrisome, if we were not creating the chances, but we are and that is encouraging."

It looked like SeaLions were going to suffer a familiar fate when United took a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute. United midfielder McKenna Waitley controlled the ball after a SeaLions corner kick and threaded a pass to Brianna Buffington. Having a step on the SeaLions backline, Buffington ran onto the ball and fired a low shot past the oncoming SeaLions goalkeeper Kaycee Gunion.

NEW ENGLAND MUTINY 1, BOSTON AZTEC BREAKERS RESERVES 1
BEVERLY, MA (06/19/10) - The Saturday afternoon match between the Boston Aztec Breakers Reserves (5-0-1 WPSL East-Northeast) and the New England Mutiny (2-1-3 WPSL East-Northeast) lived up to the billing of No. 1 vs No. 2 in the Northeast Division. The Aztecs' Leah Blayney notched her WPSL-leading ninth goal of the year in the 36th minute, only to have the Mutiny's Riley Houle save the 1-1draw  for the Mutiny with a goal in the 87th minute.

"Tough match today in the heat... against a really quality opponent." said Boston Aztec Head Coach Mike Kersker.

The first quality chance of the match came from the Mutiny in the 26th minute when Houle beat the Aztec defender and went in on goal. Aztec goalkeeper on loan from the Boston Breakers of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) Allison Lipsher made a point blank save on the shot and recovered to make a second save on the rebound.

The Aztecs capitalized on their first quality chance when Blayney received a pass at the top of the 18-yard box from Barrie Lindsay and hit a hard, rising shot that beat Mutiny goalkeeper Jackie Fede. The Mutiny were penetrating deeper into the Aztec half of the field as the game wore on but the Aztec defense anchored by Japanesse National Team member Yuka Miyazaki and Rebekah Splaine held off the attacks.

In the 87th minute, the Mutiny broke the Aztec's 547-minute shutout streak as Sarah Brochu played a through-ball to Houle, who slotted the ball low past Aztec goalkeeper Rebecca Ritchie.

FORT WORTH PANTHERS 0, DALLAS PREMIER 1
DALLAS, TX (6/19/2010) - Dallas Premier (2-1-1 WPSL Big Sky-South) and the Fort Worth Panthers (3-1-0 WPSL Big Sky-South) faced off at the University of Texas-Dallas in a "Metroplex Derby" before a near-capacity "NTSSA NIGHT" crowd with everything on the line for the home side. Fort Worth came into the match undefeated and sitting atop the Big Sky-South Division while Dallas faces a virtual elimination game for the rest of the regular season, if they want to compete in the WPSL Final Four they host this July 31-August 1.

The stingy Premier defense led by Jessica Maxwell, Allie Rogosheske, Alicia Marshall and Ashley Rape registered their second straight shutout (only three goals allowed this season), while the slumping offense was boosted by the game-winning goal by Melinda "Bullet" Carter in the important 1-0 win. The Premier offense did flow better on this night, thanks to the play of Carter & Offensive Player Of The Match Brittany Slyman.

"When this offense finally gets in sync with each other and starts finding the net, we will be unbeatable," said Dallas Head Coach Brian Flanagan.

It took until the 65th minute to dent the scoreboard, as Carter's blast from 40 yards out beat Panthers goalkeeper Lauren Wysoski high & under the crossbar. The most amazing play of the match came from Premier keeper Haley Corbell in the 87th minute, as she negated a game-tying goal by diving to her right and pushing the shot just wide of the far post.
