San Francisco, CA - The San Francisco Nighthawks (3-7-2, WPSL) earned a positive result on the road in defeating the Las Vegas Tabagators (1-9-1, WPSL) 2-0 in a Western Division, Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) game at the Bettye Wilson Complex in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
While Cristina Quintero (San Francisco State University) and Jessie Beers-Altman (Georgetown University) provided the scoring, the Hawks defense, anchored by Sarah Walker (Yale) and Petra Kowalski (The Claremont Colleges) in goal, and a back line that included Cami Hernandez (University of San Francisco), Kristi Christensen (DeAnza College), Amber Wilson (University of San Diego), Elena De Santis (San Francisco State University), and Anne Guina (University of San Francisco) playing in a flat back four, earned a well-deserved shut out.
The victory was a gift for head coach Robert Sackey who just returned from Germany where he participated in World Cup action as a member of Ghana’s National Team’s coaching staff. Ghana, in their first-ever appearance, was one of the big surprises at this year’s World Cup as they defeated the U.S. team 2-1 and advanced to the Round of 16 providing the Black Stars with the best results in Ghana National Team history. Sackey, now a U.S. citizen living in Berkeley, CA, has strong ties to his home country and both the men’s and women’s national teams. Sackey has been the Nighthawks head coach for three years.
The Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) is a national league with over thirty-five teams. The WPSL is the top ranked women’s league in the U.S. and one of the top women’s leagues in the world today.
