Nighthawks: Undefeated GGWSL Premier Division Champions
June 14, 2006

A Nighthawks Celebration!

San Francisco, CA - For the third consecutive season, the San Francisco Nighthawks (7-0-2) are champions of the, always competitive, Golden Gate Women’s Soccer League’s (GGWSL) Premier Division. The GGWSL is a 54 team, 8 division, San Francisco Bay Area regional league with relegation and promotion. The Premier Division includes many women who have played D1 NCAA soccer and want to continue competing at a premier level.

Tuesday’s 5-2 win over the San Francisco Rangers (4-2-2) completed an undefeated season for the Nighthawks in GGWSL play. Anne Guina, Jessie Beers-Altman (2), and Angela Santiago (2) all scored for the Hawks in the win. The spring GGWSL season, which traditionally is completed prior to the start of the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) play, was nearly a wash-out this year due to the region’s never-ending rainy season.

During the 2006 GGWSL spring season, the Nighthawks scored a league-leading 35 goals. Cristina Quintero, the leading scorer in San Francisco State University history, once again, led the Premier Division and the league in scoring with 12 goals. Teammate Jessie Beers-Altman, who played her college ball at Georgetown, was second with 7 goals.

The Nighthawks are comprised of a core of dedicated players that play year round with the team, playing in both GGWSL seasons (fall and spring) and the WPSL (when the team adds leading NCAA college players). The WPSL and the Premier Division of the GGWSL enables the Nighthawks to benefit from playing competitive ball year round, something that makes the Nighthawks unique and something the players relish.

The Women’s Premier Soccer League’s season is from May thru July and the GGWSL Premier Division has two seasons, one in the fall and one in the spring. The WPSL is the top women’s soccer league in the U.S. and one of the top four women’s soccer leagues in the world today
