Hawks Presented with Award on Rec & Parks Day

San Francisco, CA - On Saturday, June 10, 2006, the San Francisco Nighthawks, who are founding members and play in the Women's Premiere Soccer League (WPSL), the top ranked women's league in the U.S. and one of the top women's leagues in the world, was recognized by San Francisco's Recreation & Park Department for the "team's outstanding community partnership efforts."
Yomi Agunbiade, San Francisco Recreation & Park Department General Manager presented the Nighthawks with the award at a ceremony held at Kezar Stadium in front of Nighthawks' fans just prior to the Nighthawks' WPSL, Western Division game against FC Sacramento (which ended in a 1-1 tie). Also in attendance was Supervisor Bevan Dufty of the San Francisco City and County Board of Supervisors and San Francisco Recreation & Park Department Assistant Manager Rose Marie Dennis.
The Nighthawks have held free youth soccer clinics and provided youth soccer teams with with such items as uniforms and equipment. In addition, the team has held a variety of fundraisers in support of such things as the survivors of the Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina. Jill Lounsbury, the Nighthawks General Manager, is quick to acknowledge that the team feels a sense of responsibility and welcomes the opportunity to be active and engaged in the community.
Lounsbury presented Mr. Agunbiade with an official Nighthawks' Social Culture Futbal Club jersey. Lounsbury, speaking on behalf of the team, expressed gratitude for the support that the team receives from San Francisco's Recreation & Park Department and San Francisco's City and County government. Following the ceremony, Lounsbury stated that the team is proud of its community service and sees itself as an extension of San Francisco and the greater Bay Area.
The Nighthawks are a richly diverse team and highly representative of the Bay Area. Nighthawks' players commonly have played for (or are still playing for) such schools as Stanford, San Francisco State, University of San Francisco, Georgetown, Princeton, St. Mary's, Yale, University of Oregon, UC Berkeley, University of New Hampshire, University of Hawaii, University of San Diego, and University of Maryland.
